All the plants are grown organically. They also undergo annual inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that they are true to type and free from pest and diseases. This is the fifth year they have been inspected. On each occasion they have been passed and given an 'A' grade health certificate.

Varieties

The following varieties of strawberry runners are grown regularly. Any other variety may be grown to order

Honeoye Elsanta
Emily Pegasus
Cambridge Favourite

Honeoye

An early variety of good yield for the type. Produces medium sized, bright red/orange, glossy fruits of good flavour, which freeze well. Pick from early June to early July. Shows some resistance to botrytis.

Cambridge Favourite

A variety that travels well. It has some resistance to drought, verticillium wilt, botrytis and mildew. The flowers are protected well from the frost. Main drawback is less flavour than other berries. It is a mid-season variety and very reliable.

Elsanta

Very popular commercial variety, mainly due to its firmness. Given a large amount of care it can yield well. The variety does not produce many runners. It is susceptible to verticillium wilt, red core, mildew and crown rot, but good organic management can cut down the incidence of all of these. Its chief attribute is that it freezes better than other varieties.

Pegasus

Good disease resistance and shown to be tolerant of verticillium wilt. Ripens and fruits later than the other varieties mentioned. This one can still be picked in late July. The bright red, glossy fruit can keep well and is of good flavour.
